On this day, January 14th, 1952, America’s first weekday morning television show, Today, debuts on NBC. The show was and is filmed at NBC studios in New York City, located at 30 Rockefellar Plaza. Now called, The Today Show, the two hour morning program expanded to weekends in 1994. In 2002, The Today Show was ranked #17 on TV Guide’s Greatest TV Shows of all time. The Today Show has featured many popular hosts.

On this day, January 13th, 1910, the first public radio broadcast takes place. A live performance of the opera, Cavalleria rusticana is sent out over the airwaves from the Metropolitan Opera House in NYC. On this day, January 12th, 1969, the New York Jets of the American Football League defeat the Baltimore Colts of the National Football League and win Super Bowl III. The game is considered to be one of the greatest upsets in sports history. On this day, January 11th, 1943, Italian-American Carlo Tresca is assassinated in New York City. Tresca was a newspaper editor, orator and labor organizer who was a leader of the Industrial Workers of the World during the early 1900s. Tresca openly condemned fascism, Stalinism, and Mafia trade union involvement. Tresca had been arrested for his involvement in labor strikes and was on parole at the time of his assassination. Tresca also became openly anti-Mafia in his weekly newspaper and was aware of the risk he was taking. After leaving his parole officer on January 11th, he was crossing Fifth Avenue and 13th Street, when a black Ford pulled up next to him and Tresca was shot in the back by an unknown gunman. Although several theories have been examined as to who his assailants were, it is of general opinion that he was assassinated by the Mafia.
On this day, January 10th, 1990, Time Warner is formed from the merger of Time Inc and Warner Communications. Time Warner is a multinational corporation headquartered in the Time Warner Center in NYC, located at 10 Colombus Circle. Formerly known as Warner Communications, Inc, it was the parent company of Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Music Group and also owned DC Comics and Mad. On this day, January 9th, 2006, The Phantom of the Opera became the longest running show in Broadway history. The Phantom of the Opera is the only show that had been able to surpass Cats, which ran for 7,485 performances. For many years the speech was called “the President’s Annual Message to Congress”, the term “State of the Union” was first used by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1934. New York City was the first capitol before Washington, D.C. In 1801, Thomas Jefferson discontinued the annual practice regarding it as too similar to the monarchy. Instead, the president would write the address and sent to Congress to be read by a clerk. It wasn’t until Woodrow Wilson reinstated the practice in 1913 that it became tradition again. The call was placed from New York City to London. The call was placed by S. Gifford, president of the American Telephone & Telegraph Company to Sir Evelyn P Murray, the secretary of the General Post Office of Great Britain. On this day, January 6th, Anne Rogers Clark was born in Flushing, New York. Clark was a dog breeder and trainer. Clark was a poodle breeder and well respected in her field. She was one of the only people licensed to judge all 165 breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. She was also the first woman to win as a professional handler at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Clark also matched the record for judging, at 22 appearances. |
