On this day, October 20th, 1968, New Yorker Jacqueline Kennedy marries Aristotle Onasis. They married five years after the assassination of JFK. Kennedy wedded the Greek shipping magnate on the island of Skorpios. On this day, October 18th, 1987 the Dow Jones Industrial Average falls 508 points. The steep 22% decline dubs the day, Black Monday. My Uncle Tony loved the World's Fair. Between my other uncles and him I easily went at least a dozen times over 1964 and 1965. The Unisphere was at the center of the Fair. He must have taken this from the observation towers of the New York State pavilion. Capone, a notorious Brooklyn gangster was born in Brooklyn in New York City to Italian immigrants. Capone became involved with gang activity at a young age after being expelled from school at age 14. Capone was sentenced for 11 eleven years in federal prison which included a stay at Alcatraz. In the final years of Capone's life he deteriorated physically due to late stage neuorsyphilis which he contracted as a young man. He suffered a stroke and cardiac arrest and died on January 25th, 1947. On this day, October 16th, 1916 in Corning, New York, Margaret Sanger is born. She became a sex educator, activist and nurse and coined the term, birth control. Sanger's efforts contributed to the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case which legalized contraception in the United States. Sanger was also responsible for the first family planning clinic in the United States. On this day, October 15h, 1939 the New York Municipal Airport is dedicated. Later renamed La Guardia Airport, the airport is located on the waterfront of Flushing Bay and Bowery Bay, and borders the neighborhoods of Astoria, Jackson Heights and East Elmhurst. The airport serves as a domestic hub for Delta Air Lines. The airport also serves as a focus city for American Airlines and regional affiliate American Eagle.LaGuardia is the busiest airport in the United States without any non-stop service to and from Europe. On this day, October 14th, 1949 eleven leaders of the American Communist Party are convicted after a nine-month trial in a Federal District Court. They are convicted of conspiring to advocate the violent overthrow of the U.S. Federal Government. The Communist Party USA (CPUSA) is a Marxist political party in the United States, established in 1919. It has a long, complex history that is closely related to the histories of similar communist parties worldwide and the U.S. labor movement. Headquarters are located at 235 W. 23rd st in New York, New York. On this day, October 13th, 1843 in New York City, Henry Jones and 11 others found B'nai B'rith. B'nai B'rith is the oldest Jewish service organization in the world. In the first two decades of the 20th century B'nai B'rith launched three of today's major Jewish organizations: The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Hillel and BBYO (originally B'nai B'rith Youth Organization). Later they would take on a life of their own with varying degrees of autonomy. B'nai B'rith International bestows various recognitions and awards, including its Presidential Gold Medal awarded every few years to honor the recipient's commitment to the Jewish people and the State of Israel. Recipients have included David Ben-Gurion, John F. Kennedy, George H. W. Bush, Stephen Harper and Golda Meir.
