On this day, August 5th, in 1735, Peter Zenger of the New York Weekly Journal is found not guilty of seditious libel against the Colonial governor of New York, William Cosby.
The jury came to this decision after it was found that what Zenger had published was indeed, true.
Cosby became known as one of the most oppressive royal placeholders in British Colonial America.
This case helped to establish the concept of freedom of the press.
