On this day, January 8th, 1790, George Washington delivers the first State of Union Address in New York City, the first capitol of the country. For many years the speech was called “the President’s Annual Message to Congress”, the term “State of the Union” was first used by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1934.
New York City was the first capitol before Washington, D.C. In 1801, Thomas Jefferson discontinued the annual practice regarding it as too similar to the monarchy. Instead, the president would write the address and sent to Congress to be read by a clerk. It wasn’t until Woodrow Wilson reinstated the practice in 1913 that it became tradition again.
