On this day, November 29th, 1752, Jemima Wilkinson is born in Cumberland Township, Rhode Island. Wilkinson was a preacher who was raised Quaker. She began travelling to preach and was one of the first female visionaries of religion and Women's rights in the United States.
Wilkinson had a large following, and began the Jerusalem settlement in what is now called Penn Yan, New York. They also began a grain Mill in what is now Dresden, New York. The settlement has been landmarked and still stands today. She and her followers had a long standing relationship with the Native Americans in New York and frequently traded with the Seneca nation-tribe.
