On this day, December 12th, 1946 a fire breaks out at an abandoned ice plant in New York City, spreading to a nearby tenement on the Upper West Side. It is unknown how the fire started although it was suspected that it began with a pile of rubbish. Original reports described an explosion because the fire spread so quickly the walls of the adjoining tenement began to collapse. The tragic incident killed eight people including one fireman. Others were trapped under the rubble but most were amazingly pulled out alive to safety.
