The Enterprise was never actually sent into space, but was built to test various elements of the design of the space shuttle. It was named after the vessel on the TV Series Star Trek.
When the Shuttle fleet was retired, a variety of museums competed to obtain the retired orbiters. The Intrepid, Sea, Air, and Space museum was granted ownership of the orbiter on December 12, 2011, landed at JFK in spring of 2012, and was moved by barge to the museum, where it now sits in a special shelter..
