On this day, August 7th, 1909 Alice Huyler Ramsey began her cross country drive from Hell's Gate in Manhattan, New York to San Francisco, California becoming the first woman to drive cross country.
The 22 year-old housewife traveled with her , however, she was the only driver.
Although women were not encouraged to drive, the car company, Maxwell-Briscol used this as a publicity stunt.
Over the course of the 3,800 mile journey, Ramsey changed 11 tires, cleaned the spark plugs, repaired a broken pedal and had to sleep in the car when it was stuck in the mud.
On October 17th, 2011, Ramsey became the first woman inducted to the Automobile Hall of Fame.
