She was a Pulitizer Prize winning American novelist, short story writer and designer.
In addition to her writing accomplishments Wharton was a garden and interior designer. In 1902 she built, The Mount, her estate in Massachusetts which is still used as an example of her design principles.
Edith Wharton died of a stroke in 1937 at the domaine Le Pavillon Colombe, her 18th-century house on Rue de Montmorency in Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt, in the département of Seine-et-Oise, but now in Val d'Oise. The street is today called rue Edith Wharton.
