Gold Rush Announced
On this day, August 19th, 1848, the New York Herald announced the discovery of gold 8 months earlier on January 24, 1848 at Sutter's Mill, in California. The Herald was the first paper on the east coast to report this find and directly contributed to what was eventually known as the California Gold Rush, with Forty-niners swarming California.
