On this day, November 21st, 1964, The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge opens for traffic. At the time it is the longest suspension bridge in the world. The bridge is named for Giovanni da Verrazzano, the first known European explorer to enter the New York Harbor as well as the water is crosses: the Narrows. It has a center span of 1,298 miles. It was surpassed as the longest bridge in the world in 1981 by the Humber Bridge in the UK.
