On this day, June 5th, 1855, Mount Sinai Hospital opened for patients.
The original name of the hospital was "The Jews Hospital." It operated under this name for eleven years before changing its name to "The Mount Sinai Hospital." The hospital was founded by philanthropist Sampson Simson, who donated the land on 28th Street between 7th and 8th avenues in Manhattan, to take care of the the Jewish immigrants in New York. It was only the second Jewish Hospital.
