On this day, August 16th, 1951, Richard Hunt is born in The Bronx, New York.
Hunt was a puppeteer best known for working with Jim Henson on Sesame Street
and The Muppets. Hunt's muppet roles included Scooter, Beaker, Janice, Statler and Sweetums.
He also shared Ms. Piggy with Frank Oz until the The Muppet's last season.
One of his first major performances was on Sesame Street, Hunt began performing
background characters in early specials. He would go on to perform many
characters including Forgetful Jones, Placido Flamingo, Don Music, Gladys the Cow
Sully and an early version of Elmo. Hunt also worked on Fraggle Rock.
Hunt died in 1992 at the age of 40 due to AIDS related complications. An episode of
Sesame Street and the film, The Muppet Christmas Carol were both dedicated to
his memory.
