On this day, February 1st, 1790 the Supreme Court of the United States convenes for the first time in New York City. They met at the Old Royal Exchange Building which was located on Broad Street near the intersection of Water Street. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the United States and was created through the implementation of the Judiciary Act of 1789. The Act created the entire judiciary system. The Supreme Court was originally supposed to have six justices although there have been nine throughout its history.
