On this day, April 1st, in 1789, the United States House of Representatives held it's first quorum and elected the first Speaker of the House in New York City. They elected Frederick Muhlenberg of Pennsylvania to be speaker. He held that position until March, 1791, and then regained it from December, 1793 to March, 1795.
